The Darryl Roberts-trained six-year-old led from start to finish to collect his first win from nine starts and give jockey Libby Weiszbach the first leg of her treble.
“He’s an old horse,” Roberts said.
“I didn’t break him in until he was four.”
He was resuming from a nine-month spell yesterday after struggling with a virus.
“It was a good run,” Roberts said.
Weiszbach jumped him pretty much straight to the front.
He got out to a length clear at the top of the hill and led by about half a length going into the straight.
The field came at him and tried to catch him but couldn’t.
“I said to Libby ‘ride him up that hill then let him coast, let him relax’,” Roberts said.
“Then when you get to the grain silo pick up the pace.
“At the crossing that’s when you want to take off,” Roberts said.
It is only a short straight, he said, so you need to be up there, hitting it.
The Maitland trainer is a regular at Wallabadah.
“I’ve been coming here since I was 10 with my father,” he said.
“I rode here a few times.”
He came close to winning a Cup once too.
But his horse veered off course.
Enley was second a length-and-a-quarter back with Emmylou another half length away third.
Weiszbach backed up to win the Manuka Chaff Benchmark 45 Handicap (1350m) for Tamworth trainer Ron Buckpitt on Summa Cum Sadie.
She employed a similar philosophy to what she did to the next race win, the Wallabadah Cup.
“My husband said ‘ride this one (Rhodonite) the same’,” she said after steering the Lea Selby-trained gelding to an unexpected win.
Huit Dames and Testamentor set the early pace, with Summa Cum Sadie settled back second last.
The eight-year-old then stormed down the outside in the straight and finished on too strongly.
Mam’selle Harada also came on late to push Testamentor back to third.
