The residents – some of whom are shareholders of the company – have lodged a complaint with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.
They allege that a briefing by Santos to major investors back in October gave a false impression of the community’s support for its $2 billion Narrabri Gas Project.
Warrumbungle shire resident Simon Pockley said the briefing exaggerated Santos’s ability to access large swathes of the north-west for its gas fields.
“Our letter outlines that Santos is not receiving ‘growing support’ ... and the ... project is more controversial than ever,” he said.
The group claims that residents have declared almost three million hectares of land around the company’s proposed project area “gas field-free”.
