About 3am, a police car was stopped at the traffic lights on the corner of Brisbane and Marius streets when a Toyota Yaris driven by a 23-year-old Central Coast woman passed them and allegedly went through the red light.
“She came up from behind them through the red light, entering the intersection at speed,” Tamworth Police Sergeant James Parsons said yesterday.
Police pursued the car, which allegedly reached up to 120km/h as it sped north, Sergeant Parsons said.
The driver allegedly reached speeds of 140-160km/h after passing into the 80km/h zone on Armidale Rd.
Police called off the pursuit in the interests of public safety, Sergeant Parsons said.
“Shortly after, she was apprehended at the Colonial Motel by police,” he said.
Sergeant Parsons said the driver had taken the car without the owner’s knowledge.
The driver, who had two passengers in the car, was charged with illegal use of conveyance, Skye’s Law, not displaying L-plates and special-range PCA.
