Roads and Freight Minister Duncan Gay confirmed yesterday route C had been formally endorsed and work would now start on development of the concept design and environmental approvals.
The route is west of the Gunnedah Maize Mill and will connect the Oxley Highway with a new roundabout at the intersection of Conadilly and Warrabungle streets.
It includes the acquisition of at least two properties to allow the access to Barber St as requested by local businesses.
Roads and Maritime Services officials have been in discussions for some months with a Barber St resident whose home was in the path of the access route to Barber St.
The new route will replace the New St level crossing, which will be closed.
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson said yesterday he was pleased the recommended option had now been formalised and work on the overpass, which is being funded under the $290 million Bridges for the Bush program, could begin.
