Mr Lee went to the world premiere of the Angelina Jolie-directed movie at the State Theatre in Sydney on Monday night, with the region featuring heavily throughout the film.
Jolie was in Werris Creek and Tamworth to film the movie last year and locals threw their support behind the project, with the lucky ones trying for their 15 seconds of fame as extras.
Mr Lee said he could not wait to see the movie again, after it surpassed Guardians of the Galaxy as his top movie of the year.
“Especially because it was done locally,” he said.
“When I was in Queensland last month, I saw the first 20 minutes of the film, but watching it (in full), it was better than I thought it would be. It is such a great story. You can tell Angelina has put her heart in this and it is remarkable how these actors have come across.”
Mr Lee said he did not see anyone he knew personally, but saw plenty of familiar scenery.
“I was looking and unfortunately didn’t see anyone, but you certainly know the railway station at Werris Creek and I’m sure people will recognise themselves,” he said.
“When he’s getting on the train there are a whole heap of people at the end of the platform, but I don’t know the extras that were in it. There is a lady who looks at the camera and waves and it is still in the film.”
The Werris Creek community is looking forward to the movie opening on January 15, with locals involved in the filming.
Mark Woolfe of Creek Meats, and a Jolie fan, said it was good for the town.
“It’s fantastic,” he said.
“I’ll have to watch it twice, though, because the first time I’ll be looking for people and the second time to get the gist of it.”
Mr Woolfe said he wouldn’t be surprised if they sent buses to Tamworth when the movie opened.
“It’s got the town buzzing, it was really good,” he said.
“It put us on the map, anyway. Someone was saying Werris Creek is on IMD (Internet Movie Database). I had phone calls from people in LA to interview me.”
Mr Lee said the movie was shot in such a way that you would not even know it was shot in Australia.
“The talent scouts have done a fantastic job,” he said. “King George Ave looks fantastic.”
Mr Lee said he did not speak to Jolie at the premiere, but did get closer to her than he did at Werris Creek last year.
“There were so many stars there and they did the red carpet for an hour,” he said.
“It was my first world premiere and I’m so pleased it was that movie because we had a connection with it. Me and my darling wife will always remember this.”
