Schools, businesses and landmarks turned out in orange for Wear Orange Wednesday, an annual day to celebrate the NSW SES and its role in helping the community in times of floods and emergencies.
The Namoi Region SES has been kept busy in the past week responding to fierce storms, and deputy region controller Heath Stimson said it was timely to thank volunteers for their efforts.
“It’s exciting to see people out and about on Peel St wearing orange,” Mr Stimson said. He said though people may not think of the SES in their everyday lives, volunteers were vital in times of crisis – from storms and floods to road crash rescues and assisting police in land searches.
“We’re all about educating the community to prepare for times of emergency and disaster. We’re trying to build a resilient community, and today it’s great to raise awareness,” Mr Stimson said.
“Last week we were very, very busy responding to storms. We all need to be mindful that storms can happen at any time, and it’s an opportune time to remind people to prepare for storm season and become storm safe.”
