The incident took place at the Bendigo Gliding Club, when a pilot was attempting to land his EuroFox light plane on the runway.
Club president Frank Van Der Hoeven was at the club at the time and said a gust of wind caused the plane to veer off the runway.
"I just saw the plane was landing and as it was the wind swung around, caught the plane and caused it to veer off the runway," he said. "I was worried about it."
He said it was the first time in the club's history that an accident had occurred.
The pilot, a 53-year-old man he said, was an experienced flyer and a club member.
He said the pilot handled the accident "extremely well and professionally".
Paramedics, Van Der Hoeven said, had attended to the pilot and it appeared he had no injuries.
