THE region’s army personnel will commemorate those who served in the Charge of Beersheba with a dinner function in Tamworth tomorrow night.

It is 97 years since the October 31, 1917 charge, which went down in history as the last successful cavalry charge, and personnel from the three squadrons will gather to mark this special occasion.
The 12th/16th Hunter River Lancers has a direct link to the charge, with the 12th Light Horse being one of the founding units of the HRL.
The 12th Light Horse, along with the 4th Light Horse, led the Charge of Beersheba during World War I.
The 12/16 HRL is a reserve unit, so employers of those reservists are paramount to the success of the regiment and the dinner is also a chance for the unit to thank employers with employees in the 12/16 HRL for their support.
There will be about 130 people at the function, with Defence Reserves Support Council regional chairman Major (Retired) Glenn Jones hosting and sponsoring the employers.
The Tamworth War Memorial Town Hall is a fitting venue for the dinner, with special guests including the commander of 8th Brigade, Brigadier Allan Murray and the unit’s Colonel, Major General Iain Spence and his wife, Chris.
