Woolaston, a 1981 first grade premiership-winning coach, is standing down as club president at Sunday’s annual general meeting and leaving the club in great shape, on and off the field.
“I’ve been involved with Norths for a long while, nine years as a player and nine as an official,” Woolaston said yesterday.
“It’s a good way to go out (three premierships and a Clayton Cup).
“My two boys have both left Tamworth and going well.
“Sam is the chairman of stewards (North Queensland Racing) in Townsville. I’d like to go and see him.
“And Tom is trying to get into a first grade side in Newcastle next year.
“I’d like to go and watch him play as much as possible.
“I just hope the players stick from this year.
“Spitter (first grade coach Brad McManus) did a great job with them.
“There are also changes on the way in Group 4 with the boundaries.
“Personally I think they should join first and second division and play one group for a round and then split into first and second division.
“But the Group needs to do something.
“The gates were down this year.
“They have to make changes – they can’t leave it the way it is.”
He’s uncertain if the new proposals for Uralla and Armidale to join Group 4 will work but is adamant something must be done.
In the meantime his club receives its second Clayton Cup tonight from CRL vice- president Doug Harrison after winning the prestigious symbol of CRL supremacy back in 1951 under coach Vic Williams.
Tonight’s presentation startsat 6.30pm with Sunday’s AGM starting at 10am in the club room at Jack Woolaston Oval.
North Tamworth becomes part of an elite group when it is presented with the 2014 Clayton Cup tonight.
Two clubs – Cobar and Tweed Heads – have won it three times and North Tamworth become the sixth club (not fifth as reported yesterday) to have won it twice or more.
North (1951 and 2014) joins Tumbarumba (1985-86), Grafton Ghosts (2010-11) and Forster Tuncurry (1994-95) as the two-time winners.
