The 34-year-old hopes to continue his winning ways at next year's Tour and predicted fellow Canberran Michael Matthews could have a yellow start to his debut in the world's biggest race.

Rogers announced he was back with two brilliant stage wins at the Giro and then another at the Tour after serving a four-month provisional ban for testing positive to clenbuterol – a ban the International Cycling Union (UCI) quashed because he had accidently eaten contaminated meat at last year's Tour of Beijing.

While he never wants to repeat what happened in China, Rogers said it produced a fire in his belly he put to good use at the Giro.

Those stage wins turned into belief and he is hoping to reproduce those results at the Tour and the Giro in 2015.

"That was probably the most satisfying thing for me this year – to win that battle, to come back and show that I was still very, very competitive and I could still win very important races," Rogers told Fairfax Media.

"Maybe more satisfying than the actual victory itself [is] that you still have what's required to perform."

Matthews crashed just days before he was due to make his Tour debut, which also fired up the 24-year-old.

He won a stage at the Vuelta a Espana and spent three days in the red leader's jersey, before finishing 14th in the world road race championships in Spain.

Rogers said Matthews was good at identifying goals and chasing them, and had a very high success rate.

He said the difference between champions and normal athletes was how they responded to adversity and Matthews had shown he was a cut above with the way he picked himself up.

Rogers was confident "Bling" would produce at next year's Tour de France.

"If there's a team time trial, [Orica] GreenEDGE performs very well in those, so the yellow jersey could be right there for the taking," he said.

"With his ability to sprint and be up there in the finishes in the first stages and then with the team time trial, who knows what's possible."

Rogers said there was no way he was going to return for this year's Tour of Beijing after what happened in 2013.

He will not need to even consider next year because the race is not on the UCI's calendar.

The three-time world time trial champion will finish his year off at Le Tour De France Saitama Criterium in Japan next Saturday.

Then his Tinkoff-Saxo team will climb Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania as part of a team camp, the brainchild of team boss Bjarne Riis.

Rogers said they would experience temperatures of between minus 15 degrees and 30 degrees as they climbed to 5895 metres above sea level.

"It's quite an exciting trip," he said. "It won't be a walk in the park. It's a pretty ambitious quest on behalf of the team, but hopefully it will be a very good team-building experience for us."

Tinkoff-Saxo will face even bigger challenges next year: trying to come up with a team that can accommodate both Alberto Contador and Peter Sagan for the Tour.

Rogers said they were trying to push the boundaries of cycling and produce the best team in the world, but he felt careful planning would be needed to make chasing both the general classification and sprinter's jerseys work.

"What we want to do is avoid chasing two jerseys ordinarily instead of going for one very well," Rogers said.

"We've only got a limited amount of riders, [so] we have to decide a goal and take a team that fulfils that goal."

There is also a challenge for the main contenders for the Tour's yellow jersey – Contador, Chris Froome, Nairo Quintana and Vincenzo Nibali – to race in all three grand tours – the Giro, the Tour and the Vuelta – in order to create a season with a focus on the big events, akin to tennis and golf.

Rogers said it was a very ambitious challenge and a huge task to ride three 21-day races in a year, but pointed to fellow Aussie Adam Hansen, who has ridden all three grand tours in the past three years.

It was something Rogers did not plan to do himself; two was enough.

"I see it as a way to kick along the sport and keep promoting the sport ... something similar to what tennis does," he said.

"That's what the people love to see – the best riders being all together."
