AFTER narrowly being denied a race win on Saturday afternoon, Greg Crick had his moment on Sunday morning when he claimed the final chequered flag of the Touring Car Masters’ Bathurst round.
On Saturday it was Jim Richards who held off Crick in the run to the line, but for race three at Mount Panorama the Tasmanian lead for a bulk of the seven laps.
Crick went from pole this morning in a rolling start and he got a good jump once the green light was given.
While Richards very nearly snuck through on his inside from position three, Crick kept his Charger E55 in front.
John Bowe came from position four into second behind Crick as they headed up the mountain for the first time, with Richards following in third.
Series frontrunner Bowe then pulled off a passing move to claim the lead on lap two, but he had a problem with his front right tyre locking coming through The Chase and was forced to pit, the loose rubber falling off the side of his Mustang Trans Am.
He ended up with a DNF.
“I locked the wheel. It has been having a bit of brake balance issues, but I wasn’t in that deep I didn’t think. But anyway, the fact of the matter is I locked the wheel,” he said.
“It then threw all the tread off and that bent all the steering.
“It was unreal. I wanted to finish just because I like finishing, but it wouldn’t have done another lap. It had some serious issues, it’s unlucky but it is just one of motor sport’s frustrations.”
That gifted Crick back the lead and as he was the fastest man on track – a two minutes, 22.2010 seconds circuit his best effort – he set about giving himself a buffer over Richards.
With three laps to go the gap stood at 1.77 seconds, while Richards also had to contend with Kim Jane on his bumper close behind in third.
Jane had a look down Richards’ outside through Conrod Straight on lap five, but the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame member was able to hold him off.
At that point anyway.
As the pair raced towards Murray’s Corner for the final time, Jane was able to get around Richards to claim second place behind Crick.
