The inaugural Nundle to Chaffey Dam Carp Muster attracted more than 70 fishers of all ages and abilities eager to hook as many of the introduced species as possible.

“The carp, however, proved to be somewhat elusive, especially at Chaffey Dam, but good catches were made along the Peel at Nundle,” said co-organiser Kerrie Fearby.

“Travelling all the way from Laurieton (on the Mid North Coast) was certainly worthwhile for Iain Morrison, who topped the most caught count with a massive 10. He went home $400 richer for that effort.”

Nundle’s Ed Potts used his local knowledge to pick out the spot where he caught a 6.4kg monster to take out the prize for heaviest carp, while fellow local Jayden Morrow took out the junior category with a 4.4kg fish.

After having no luck at Chaffey Dam on Saturday, Uralla fisherman Callan McGuiness yesterday relocated to the banks of the Peel River.

His determination paid off when he managed to snag two carp – weighing 3.5kg and 2.8kg respectively – using bread as bait.

The 22-year-old, who works as a conservation and land manager, said he hoped the event would return again next year.

The event was organised by the Nundle Fishing Club and Upper Peel Landcare.
