In the 13 local government areas across this region, there are some 200 candidates nominated to fill the 148 councillor seats vacant for the September 8 poll.
The elections will decide the makeup of local councils for the next four-year term.
In Tamworth, the pre-poll centre is open from 8.30am today in the old Joblink Plus office, next to the ABC radio office and a couple of doors down from Peel House and the city library.
Across the Tamworth Regional Council area, there are four pre-poll voting offices.
At Barraba, Nundle and Manilla, the council offices will also operate from today until September 7 and take pre-poll votes.
On election day there will be 24 polling places operating – but these do not include the pre-poll centres.
According to the NSW Electoral Commission, which is handling the elections for 12 of the 13 council areas in the region, there are 40,150 people eligible and enrolled to vote in the Tamworth council poll.
It is estimated up to 8600 of them will vote before September 8, using pre-poll voting facilities.
Pre-polling is for residents who will not be in their council area on September 8 or who can’t make it to a polling place on that day due to sickness, travelling, approaching maternity or being at work.
Postal voting is also available.
In Tamworth, the pre-poll centre is open until 5pm each day, except for the last day, when it will close at 6pm on Friday, September 7.
At Barraba, Manilla and Nundle, pre-polling can be done from 8.30am to noon, and from 1pm to 4.30pm each weekday.
Seventeen candidates will contest the nine vacancies in the Tamworth Regional Council poll.
