Last year Alf Powell told reporters he wasn’t sure what the secret to a long life was – but morning and afternoon naps for the past few years couldn’t hurt.
Yesterday the man thought to be Tamworth’s oldest male citizen turned 106 glorious years old – and every one of the younger nursing home residents at Bupa he shares friendships with, helped mark the milestone.
He’s said for years that if he knew the secret, he’d bottle it. He’s still saying it. And most everyone who knows him – or even knows of his birthdays – would love to sip from the elixir in that cup.
He’s still pretty chirpy, cheeky and a chatterbox. His eyesight is poorer but daughter Judith Archbold and others still read to him and that keeps him up with the rest of the world.
He left school and became a messenger boy at the age of 14 before having a long career with a media publishing and distribution company.
He retired to Tamworth about 25 years ago.
