HE mightn’t have been there last year with them, but Narrabri second-rower Sam Clements knows a thing or two about playing in grand finals.

Saturday will be his fourth.
“It’s good to be in another grand final,” Clements said.
“I can’t wait.”
He admits he’s been pretty lucky.
“You go through and a lot of people tell you they’ve never played in one,” he said.
Or won one, which he has done too.
He’s even got to lead a side in a grand final, captaining St Albert’s in the New England decider last year.
It was work opportunities that saw him gravitate west, where he’s found himself playing alongside a few Albies alumni.
“It’s definitely a different game. It’s a lot more physical,” Clements said, comparing the two competitions.
“You’ve still got to be quite fit but it’s definitely more forward-orientated.”
He said up in the New England you could cover for a weak forward pack through your backs.
Not so in Central North. There’s no way to hide it.
He played at eight for Albies but, with Todd Farrer settled there at the back, he moved back into the second row.
That was where he played most of his school footy.
“Being the tallest in this pack, it was the only job for me,” he said.
He’s even taken on the role of calling the lineouts, which he did at Albies too.
Being pretty much the only new face in the pack, he admitted it was a bit intimidating at the start but he quickly grew into his role.
And he did have one familiar face.
He and second row partner Henry Curtin played together for a couple of seasons at Albies and were part of the successful 2011 side.
Interestingly, both were playing different positions to what they are now.
“When we played together I was eight and he was six,” Clements said.
Now they’re playing in the second row together, which Clements conceded is a “bit different”.
He’s enjoying being part of the pack.
“Especially at this time of the year,” he said.
“No-one’s hiding in that pack – everyone’s putting their hands up.”
That’s showing on the field, with the forwards really laying a strong foundation.
“We know if we do the work in the forwards, we know the backs can do the job,” Clements said.
He said the thing they probably need to work on from two weeks ago is the mental side, and making sure they match Pirates early.
“Pirates started unbelievably,” he said.
“We were playing catch-up.
“Once we got into our rhythm it became a real tussle.”
The second half was perfect finals football, and the blueprint for what they have to do on Saturday.
