WITH the recent visit of the steam train to Tamworth and the picture of the first train in the 1880s, it is interesting to note that there are at least three remaining examples of the 12 class locos, with at least one of them still operational after 137 years.

This makes 3643, the 43rd of the C36 class, only a pup at 88.
It is also of interest that of the
75 C36 engines, 65 were built by Clyde Engineering and 10 by
railway workshop. Remember, this was in the 1920s.
Yes, they build locomotives and trains in Australia today, but source most of the parts overseas.
For the record, the last steam- hauled train into Tamworth was about eight years ago, with the Powerhouse Museum 3830 doing the honours with shuttle trips to Duri.
