Secretary-manager Judy Lamb was delighted with the initial staging which drew 28 teams of triples to the club over the weekend for the Tamworth trio of Chris Herden, Garry Macaulay and Phil Johnson to prevail.
They were the only six-game winners on a weekend where every team played three games of 14 ends each day.
They pocketed $2100 from a carnival where Community Mutual was the major sponsor with Ausure Insurance also a good supporter.
The Manilla trio of Doug Cook, Bradley Laws and Chris O’Neill were third with five wins and a composite team of Manilla’s Ross Grudgfield, Lightning Ridge’s Richard Latta and Guyra’s “Moose” Presnell third.
Lamb said the great response and success ensured it would continue next year.
“We can’t get any bigger – we had a full field of 28 teams,” she said. “But we might be better.”
Johnson, one of the winning South trio, reckoned it a great weekend.
“Not just because we won,” Johnson said.
“But because of the way it was run.
“It was well organised and went off really well.
“The hospitality was brilliant too.
“I’m lucky I was in a trio with Herdo and Gazza.”
Herden is the reigning CNDBA Bowler of the Year and currently second to clubmate Nick Golledge in this year’s BOTYA.
“Herdo is a great bowler but good old Gazz, he hasn’t had a game since February and then comes out and plays like that. He’s a good player.”
Johnson is also one of the organisers of the CNDBA’s Bowler of The Year Award, of which the Manilla Two Bowl Triples is a contributing event.
Herden’s win catapulted him to just 10 points behind Golledge but, alas for Herden, he has a state event (Inter Zone Championships) in a fortnight and cannot play in the final BOTYA event at Kootingal.
“Yeah, tough luck for Herdo but Graham Harriott and Kim Greentree can still knock Nick off, Johnson said.
“They have to win at Kooty and Nick run nowhere to get him though.”
It’s another big weekend of lawn bowls in the CNDBA, with the Werris Creek club hosting its President’s day on Saturday.
Kootingal Bowling Club also hosts the Zone 3 Champion of Club Champions Singles this weekend while the West Tamworth Sports & Bowling Club runs a memorial pairs on Sunday in memory of the late Janette and Geoffrey Cluff.
The Janette and Geoffrey Club Memorial Shield is a mixed pairs day with three games of 11 ends. Entry is $40 and includes lunch. Ring the West club (67658205) for more information.
