The cost of registering a caravan in NSW was “drastically” more expensive than in neighbouring states Queensland and Victoria due to the weight tax, the Tamworth and District Caravanning Club said.
Secretary Pam Wilson and husband Frank said to register their caravan, weighing in at 2920 kg, would cost $54 in Victoria, $158 in Queensland, but a staggering $458 in NSW.
“We launched a petition 12 months ago to address unfair differences in registration costs,” Mrs Wilson said.
The Australia-wide petition gained more than 11,300 signatures, with a further 640 online.
Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said he was “proud” to receive the petition, as well as a submission from the club, to table on the floor of parliament for debate in the first week of August.
He said the revenue raised from registration and traffic infringements was funnelled into upgrading roads.
“While that’s welcome, we still need a fairer registration system,” Mr Anderson said.
He said the unfair costs meant NSW residents often registered their vehicles interstate.
“I want to see more black and yellow plates on vehicles that live locally.”
