Trainer Melanie Mabbott has only just received Marlo Moola from owner Susan Smith who has been racing the dog at The Gardens in Newcastle.
It was the black bitch’s fifth race after she only managed two sevenths, an eighth and a sixth in Newcastle.
“It was a bit of a surprise,” Mabbott said.
“She has been training well so when she jumped in front I knew she might go all right. I think we can give the final a go.”
Marlo Moola finished almost two lengths in front of Patrick Parelli’s Devine Bubbles.
Devine Bubbles missed the jump but caught the field quickly on the top turn and finished fast along with Loyd Metcalf’s Heroic Raider who got third.
In her first ever run, Angry Bird flew to the front and blitzed the field with a blistering run in the second heat.
Despite the two-year-old black and white bitch winning by five lengths, trainer Mark Craig said she could go a lot faster than that.
“She has been trialling really well here,” Craig said.
“She has broken the 20 second mark in the trials and will be hard to beat in the final.”
She came out of box four in front of the field and went straight to the fence.
She beat Mabbott’s other runner Ninja Rocks by five lengths, with Peter Midson’s Where’s Girl in third.
Mabbott will have two in the final after Ninja Rocks recorded 20.43 seconds.
That was the exact time that Janet Silver’s Hot Chip Sanga and Craig’s Aventador ran to tie for first in the third heat.
Angry Bird set the fastest time with a slick 20.07 seconds in the second heat, although it didn’t last long.
David Booby’s Pardon The Pun was the only dog to break the 20 second mark with a 19.92 seconds in the final heat.
