NEMINGHA is humming this Easter weekend as the Tamworth Radio Control Car Club hosts the Tamworth Cup at the RC track.
The club has recorded a record 65 entries this year across the three classes.
Tamworth president John Robertson was overwhelmed by the numbers this year.
“There are drivers here form Bowral to the Sunshine Coast and everywhere in between,” Roberstson said.
The weekend is for electric cars only with some of them reaching over 100km/h on the tight Tamworth track.
Yesterday saw a practice day with all entrants adjusting their cars to suite the conditions.
Club secretary and keen race Todd D’Elboux said that the cars have all the adjustments of a V8 race car.
“These are not toys, it is very technical and skilful,” D’Elboux said.
Today the racers will do five round s of qualifying races over five, six, and seven minute races, depending on class.
Tomorrow will see another three rounds of qualifying before the finals.
There will also be a State of Origin series of races.
Shane Hyde from the Logan City has come down for the sixth year in a row and is determined to take the goods home.
Hyde has brought another four racers with him form his club, although there are about 15 Maroons all up.
This will be the tenth year the series has run.
NSW is actually winning this one with five of the last nine races, while Queensland has three and one was washed out.
“We are here for the fun and the atmosphere,” Hyde said.
“It is also a really good track and set up here.”
The Queensland contingent and several others are camping or caravanning at the track overnight.
“There is plenty of banter and we have a great weekend here,” Hyde said.
The 10 car finals will start tomorrow afternoon with spectators welcome to attend.
