THE Open event of the National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Finals at Tamworth’s Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC) proved to be first-class competition yesterday as the top score was taken out by local cutter and professional trainer Dean Holden of Woolomin.

Holden, sitting atop Copperwood Ranch’s bay stallion Six Spins, topped an elite field with an outstanding score of 150.5 points to best runner up One Roan Peptos ridden by Heath Sinclair of Bell in Queensland who finished on a score of 150 points.
The two stallions have been fighting it out for NCHA’s National Open Horse of The Year that will be announced at the awards presentation tomorrow night and this event will finally decide who will rise to the occasion.
The first go-round of the Yulgilbar Snafflebit Futurity kicked off yesterday, with 57 competitive three-year-olds showing their stuff in the arena.
Top score of the go-round on 145 points was a three-way tie shared between the Queenslanders, with Pounce On Coals ridden by Jon Templeton of Kingaroy, Dual Lena ridden by Michael Aspinall of Warwick and Darlea Grouserey ridden by Ashley Wormwell of Clermont.
Today brings the second go-round of the Yulgilbar Snafflebit Futurity where the top 15 finalists will be eligible to compete in the final tomorrow.
Other events tomorrow include Junior & Senior Youth and the AQHA Junior Horse.
