THE 2014 Burke & Smyth Cup bounced into action at Scully Park on Friday night.
The cup was introduced last season and is run by the Tamworth Swans as a pre-season competition for high school players.
Last year’s tournament featured teams from Farrer, Oxley and McCarthy. Farrer are again involved this year with two teams, and had a successful first round.
The Farrer As had a close tussle with McCarthy in the first game but came out on top 3.7 (25) to 3.2 (20).
The Bs had an easier time of it accounting for the Barbarians team 3.0 (18) to 0.2 (2). Swans President Josh McKenzie said it was a bit of a scratchy start with the McCarthy and Barbarians sides a bit light-on for numbers but it was a good starting point.
He said anyone who wanted a game was more than welcome to come along.
Games are played over two 20-minute halves and under modified rules – similar to AFL 9s. The tournament doubles as a trialling and selection process for the Tamworth Swans junior team, although there is no obligation to go on to become a junior playing member.
Friday nights second round will see McCarthy playing Farrer B in the 5pm game and Farrer A matching up against the Barbarians in the second fixture.
