The man came to the 21-year-old woman’s aid in White St after she was forced into a laneway and sexually assaulted about 1am on Sunday.
The offender fled the scene before the woman reported the incident to police.
Detectives launched an investigation and released a description of the attacker, while appealing for the anonymous helper to contact them.
Oxley Detective Sergeant John Summers said police were yet to hear from him but were still reviewing CCTV footage from the area.
“Police are still analysing White St and surrounding streets, trying to follow the last movements of the victim and possible suspects,” he said.
“Inquiries are continuing in relation to that.”
It follows a public appeal for help over the attack, which occurred in a laneway directly across the road from the City Plaza car park.
Detective Sergeant Summers said more people had come forward since the weekend.
“We received a number of Crime Stopper files pertaining to the investigation and we are following up all lines of inquiry,” he said.
“Police are still seeking further assistance and if anyone has any information, no matter how small, we will certainly investigate it.”
The attacker is described as being of Indian sub-continental in appearance and aged in his late 20s and about 170cm tall.
The man has short, black hair and facial hair, and was last seen wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.
Anyone who can assist police or believes they have information on the identity of the offender is urged to contact Tamworth detectives on 6768 2999 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
