She replicated the effort of Walcha Cup Prelude winner Jefferson Park, who had won the previous race.
Both won by two and three quarter lengths after leading and racing away from their opposition up the Armidale hill.
However, that’s where the resemblance might end.
While chestnut gelding Jefferson Park is a fine-looking, long-barrelled chestnut, Memphis Mafia is a five-year-old bay mare.
Jefferson Park has won seven of his 15 starts while Memphis Mafia has won won three of her 26 starts.
The daughter of Elvestroem has, though, won her last two starts, following on from a good win over Jewel’s Shadow at Quirindi on Boxing Day with another impressive win at Armidale on Monday.
Lesley Jeffriess trains Memphis Mafia for a large syndicate of owners from Armidale and Tamworth.
Sonia Reid is one of those owners and was an emotional young lady again.
Memphis Mafia had given her her first win at Quirindi on Boxing Day and on Monday she handed her her second win with a few tears thrown in.
Jeffriess believes the mare can develop despite being a “bit scratchy”.
“She’s a handy horse – goes real good but is a bit scratchy,” Jeffriess said.
While she celebrated a win at Armidale, she has three of her stable nominated at Tamworth for Friday’s meeting – Stretch, Takiri and Elle’s Shadow.
Recent Wallabadah Cup winner Stretch heads her hopes on Friday while she also has Takiri entered on Saturday at Bingara along with Ballintine in the $9000 Austrabrokers RWA Bingara Cup (1300m) .
Stretch is one of 10 nominations for Friday’s B60 1600m at Tamworth.
Coming off a seventh to Rhodonite in the Deepwater Cup, he will carry 54.5kg with the Brett Thompson-trained Slate On Edge the topweight.
The Gulgong-trained galloper, a last-start winner at Wellington, received 60.5kg yesterday while Luke Griffith’s Don’t move received 58.5kg.
