John Dunne, 23, pleaded guilty to nine charges stemming from the attack on a 25-year-old Guyra man on August 9 at the Dumaresq Dam.
Police said Dunne repeatedly kicked and punched the victim in the head, knocking him unconscious and leaving him with serious facial injuries.
After the violent assault, the 23-year-old stole the man’s car, which was later dumped and found burnt out.
In a sentencing hearing in Armidale Local Court this week, Magistrate Karen Stafford sentenced Dunne to two years’ jail, with 12 months non-parole, for the charges of maliciously damaging the Ford vehicle by fire, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
The 23-year-old was also sentenced to six months behind bars for taking and driving a car without the consent of the owner and was convicted without penalty for negligent driving, learner driver not accompanied, and using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle.
Dunne will be eligible for supervised parole in December next year.
