Police patrolling Peel St spotted the 34-year-old Seahampton man banging on glass doors and pulling on door handles about 3.10am on Saturday.
They stopped to speak to the man, whom they believed was under the influence of alcohol, drugs or both, and were met with a string of expletives.
It is alleged the man then struck out at the officers and engaged in a “protracted wrestle”, until he was eventually subdued with the aid of capsicum spray.
He was taken to Tamworth Police Station and charged with two counts of assaulting police, two counts of resisting arrest and one count of offensive conduct.
He was bailed to appear in Tamworth Local Court on December 23.
