At Mudgee today he has race favourite Akamas primed for the $30,000 Robert Oatley Vineyards Mudgee Cup (1600m) while Run Legless and Sutton Surprise are entered in tomorrow’s $6000 Blacktown City Council Cup (1450m) at Quirindi.
Run Legless has drawn barrier two and Sutton Surprise 11 but, after yesterday’s rain, Sutton Surprise could be headed to Monday’s Dubbo meeting.
“She could go to Dubbo,” Griffith said yesterday. “She didn’t handle a Heavy 9 at Quirindi before.”
The winner of four of her 25 starts, Sutton Surprise has apprentice Meg Hoey claiming 3kg if she does run at Quirindi.
Griffith couldn’t believe the change in track rating but hopes Run Legless, a four-year-old gelding who has won three of his 35, might win the Blacktown City Council Cup for him.
Quirindi has always been a good track for him and he won his second HNWRA trainers’ premiership there earlier this year.
Mudgee has been kind to him as well and he’s confident Akamas can add another cup tohis collection.
The Muswellbrook Cup winner was a fair seventh in Sydney last Saturday.
“It wasn’t a bad run,” Griffith said.
“They went a bit slow early and he got caught in a bit of traffic.
“He didn’t have a real good run.
“He also carried 59 down there.
“When he got 57 at Mudgee and it was back to a mile and G. Ryan didn’t have a ride I threw him in.
“He’s done well but will go for a spell, win, lose or draw after Mudgee.
“There’s just 10 in it and he drew okay in six. Plus Greg knows him well.
“They had 7mm of rain out there so it should be perfect for him.”
