From a humble beginning at Moonbi in 1974 with 25 contestants to largest indoor equine competition in the Southern Hemisphere featuring 540 horses and more than $700,000 in prizemoney, the 2013 edition will certainly be an 11-day equine extravaganza.
As part of the 40th celebrations, the NCHA is also staging a celebrity cutting competition.
Renowned Australian singer John Farnham has competed in previous celebrity cutting events and he once said: “Sit deep, push back, heels down and prepare for the ride of your life”.
On Friday June 6, six celebrities will try to do just that when the special competition is held in AELEC.
Sophie Clabburn (Sunny Cowgirls band), Ian Hindmarsh (retired Parramatta rugby league player), Colin Friels (Australian actor), James Blundell (country music singer), Emm Hall (Tamworth radio announcer) and Kevin Anderson (Member for Tamworth) will battle it out in the Celebrity Cutting.
Winner receives $3000 from the NCHA to donate to their chosen charity.
The NCHA has also prepared other popular events, with a bull ride and rodeo and the Stockman’s Challenge.
Add to that the huge country/western trade display, a professional farriers’ competition and the NCHA Select Cutting Horse Sale and the 2013 Futurity will be a massive show again.
More than 20,000 people from across Australia, the USA, New Zealand and New Caledonia visit Tamworth during the 11-day Futurity from May 30.
Tamworth Regional Council mayor Col Murray reckons some $3.5million is injected into the Tamworth economy every year during the Futurity.
“The Futurity is an event steeped in history and tradition and we are delighted to welcome cutting horse enthusiasts from across the country to our world-class AELEC,” he said.
