THERE can be no excuses for the reported behaviour of some Catholic clergy. There can be no excuses for the actions of those in authority who failed to report abuses, instead focusing on preserving the Catholic Church’s reputation.
There may be reasons (e.g. the intransigent attitude of the Church towards clergy marrying, which would see an intake of more balanced individuals, changing community attitudes towards sexual matters). But, there can be no excuses.
I feel great pity for the victims. However, I also feel for the many good religious people and clergy who contribute positively and daily to the welfare of the youth, the sick, the elderly and the destitute. How must they feel?
I was schooled and ministered by nuns, brothers and priests, and most of them remain amongst the finest people I have known.
