He gained national status from the reality television show The Mole and yesterday he was announced as Barraba's Young Achiever of the year.
He was also recognised for his ongoing commitment to the Volunteer Rescue Association as well as lending his services to a promotion to encourage people to shop in Barraba.
The Barraba Shire Council celebrated its Australia Day awards at the town's swimming pool with the Citizen of the Year award going to Robert Sweeney.
Mr Sweeney – an amateur historian and military enthusiast – has been a major force in the running of the Barraba Legacy branch and is secretary of the Barraba RSL sub-branch.
He was also involved with the restoration of a field artillery piece used by the 33rd Battalion during World War I.
His nomination was submitted by the Rotary Club of Barraba.
Organisers said a good crowd was on hand for the day and the celebration was entertained by the Barraba Shire Band.
Barraba's Australia Day ambassador was Gary O'Callaghan, a Sydney radio personality.
The council opened the gates of the pool with free admission to an inflatable pontoon in the main pool and the water slide.
