Tamworth And District Aquatic Centre (TADAC) group president, Mal Higgerson, said the report being tabled at the council’s meeting tonight about the pool facilities made some good suggestions.
The report urges the council to adopt a number of principles which, if acted upon, could see the city pool at Kable Ave closed and the South and West War Memorial Pool transformed into an aquatic/recreational centre which would include a heated and covered pool and possibly a wave pool, sauna, spa, gym and other facilities.
“This is ideal — this is what we have aimed for,” he said.
Mr Higgerson said turning the Scully Park pool into an aquatic centre is not a new idea and has been a long-term plan of TADAC.
But for such an enterprise to be a success “it’s got to be more than an aquatic centre”, he said.
Mr Higgerson would like to see a council run and owned operation that guaranteed community access.
“It has to be organised correctly and looked at with vision,” he said.
“One really essential thing would be a creche — we must have one of those... and what about an ice skating rink?”
Anything is possible but Mr Higgerson said the support for such an ambitious facility must come from council and the community together.
With this in mind, Mr Higgerson said it would be important for interest groups to have a say in any future aquatic/ recreational centre development but not be in control lest the group lose sight of the bigger picture.
