NORTH West PSSA Rugby selectors have come up with a strong 21-player squad for this year’s State Primary Schools Rugby Union Carnival. The squad will train together and play trial games over the next few months to prepare for the carnival at Nowra from August 28-30 under the guidance of manager-coach Barry Everingham.

He said the side has a tough draw, meeting last year’s winners, Sydney South West, first up.
“We expect to be competitive,” he said.
“The players will be especially working on their cleaning out skills to try and ensure the talented, quick backline and mobile forwards can use the ball they get against what will be bigger and more experienced opposition.
“If we perform well as a team, we are sure to continue the tradition of NW players vying strongly for State selection with an added bonus this year of an Invitation Northern Barbarians team to be selected to join NSW, ACT and Victorian squads at the interstate exchange in Tamworth later this year.”
The 21-player squad was selected after North West trials in Barraba on Tuesday, Everingham said.
“The boys were joined by numerous other triallists who were put through skills and drills sessions followed by games under the coaching and support of teachers and parents,” he said.
David Munday (Mallawa Primary School), Penny Logan (Moree Primary), and Andrew Watson (Armidale City) assisted Everingham at various times.
NSWRU development officer Greg Mumm, former Wallaby David Carter and a number of parents gave great support over the trial period.
“The Moree, Barraba, Quirindi and Pirates junior and senior clubs are to be thanked for the use of their grounds, jumpers and equipment along with Ron Bridges (Barraba RUFC) canteen operators and the mums and dads who travelled many hours and kilometres.”
