Moree professional Scott Roworth, also the NWDGA junior promotion officer, predicts plenty of success for the young players in his seven-man squad.
“While we’re going down to win it, realistically we’re aiming for second,” he said this week.
“It’s a mixture. We’ve got some good young players. I think we’ll be very strong in two or three years’ time.”
15-year-old Moree golfer John Brown junior is the team’s low marker (4) but Narrabri’s Adam Smith (6) will be the team number one. The eight-man squad also includes three 13 and 14-year-olds – Moree pair Robert Wharram (11) and Ben Kirkby (13) and Narrabri’s Simon Hutchen (12).
Moree’s Jackson Lynch (5), and Warren McFadyen (6) complete the side with Narrabri’s Josh Orman (5).
“Obviously Hunter Valley and Central North are going to be the sides to beat but we’ll go all right,” Roworth said.
“Two of our 11 and 12 markers beat the five and six markers at practice match play in Narrabri last weekend.”
North West, Central North, Hunter Valley and Western play match play rounds this morning and afternoon with the final and deciding round tomorrow morning.
Hunter Valley is the defending Baker Trinder Shield champion.
Central North’s Baker Trinder Shield team may not be its strongest with a couple of players opting to play the Tamworth Club Championships instead, said CN junior promotion officer Greg Kellett.
“But good luck to them,” he said.
“Obviously we would love to have Steve Myers in the side but he chose the club championships,” he said.
“We’ve no problem with that and it gave Darren Burger and Gary McBeath the chance to play. They have come in and done well in practice rounds.”
