Hiscock won the national 35-40yrs tennis championships in singles and doubles over two weeks of competition in Hobart recently.
Hiscock competed in the teams event for NSW during the first week and ended up winning.
Then during the second week he won the singles and doubles in the individual events of the Australian championships.
“And I was lucky enough to get picked in the Australian 35 to 40 side and we’re travelling over to Vienna in September,” Hiscock said.
“We play against 20 other countries throughout the world.
“Next year it’s being held in Canberra and if you get picked in the Australian side the world titles are at Miami, Florida.
“Miami is where I want to try to get to but Austria – I’m going to love it there too.”
Hiscock has a strong tennis background which includes competing in the United States and Europe.
“I played a fair bit over in the United States when I was younger,” Hiscock said.
“I had a scholarship over there to Cook County in Texas for 16 or 17 months.
“When I finished there, myself and a few other guys had a campervan and we went through Europe playing satellite circuits.
“Even at the veterans’ tournaments there’s a lot of ex-professional players there who have had top 100 rankings and some who’ve played Davis Cup.
”There was one guy there who was 80 who’d played Davis Cup for Australia.
“Just some of the stories these guys tell you are unbelievable.
“The good thing about veterans’ tennis is that it comes down to your tennis ability and not so much your age and fitness.
“I’m 37 now but if I go and play an open tournament in Sydney it’s very hard.”
While an excellent tennis player in his own right, Hiscock also coaches Tamworth’s rising 15-year-old tennis star Raymond Holder.
Holder recently won the NSW under 16s hardcourt doubles title, a victory which impressed his coach.
“He won the under 16 in doubles which is incredible. It’s a great effort,” Hiscock said.
“He’s got all the strokes, and he’s got it between the ears so now we’re working on his fitness.
“He stands six foot three and he’s got a serve that’s 185 or 189 kilometres an hour so he’s got a big future.”
Hiscock is the head coach at West Tamworth Tennis Club and still has vacancies for his term one coaching classes.
