Berry carded a round of 68 yesterday to finish four under par and just one shot clear of New South Wales Golf Club trainee Glen Dick.
Tamworth Golf Club trainee professional Steve Myers heads the local contingent of golfers in tenth position after a score of 73, while Longyard trainee Greg Collins held 16th position with a round of 74.
Former Longyard member Nick Inglis, who is now a trainee at the Cromer Golf Club, finished in 39th position with a round of 78 while Tamworth Golf Club trainee Tim Deans finished in 44th position after a round of 80.
Berry, a former member of the NSW team, fired five birdies with the only blemish, a bogey, coming at the tough par 3 13th.
"This is the first time I have played The Longyard," Beery said after his round.
"I walked the front nine last night to get an idea of the distance and this morning I was able to check out the yardage of each hole which helped."
The tournament is only his second trainee event this year as a back strain has limited his practice.
NSW PGA events and coordinator officer David Barker said 55 trainees started the two-day event, which carries prize money of up to $10,000.
Yesterday's shotgun start saw the trainees team up with the regular Tamworth
amateurs.
In the amateur stakes, Ben Thurlow (+5) pipped Jack Chillingworth on a countback to claim the A grade win, Steve Collins took out B grade on a countback (+2) from Ros Chapman, while Mitch Carrington bagged C grade (+4) from John O'Rourke (+1).
The action of today's Pro-am starts at 7am.
