A number of family members were believed to be in the house when it erupted in flames and quickly spread to two cars parked nearby, destroying them, too. About 1.20pm, reports indicated the Gunnedah Rd dwelling was well alight, about 18km from the city near Appleby Ln.
Two Fire and Rescue crews from Tamworth attended, as did Rural Fire Service crews from Somerton, Moore Creek and Tamworth. They fought the blaze for about 40 minutes before it was put out. As a result of the house fire, flames spread to a car in the carport.
Bystanders tried to drag it to a safe place, but it could not be saved. A second car was also destroyed. Two men suffered smoke inhalation and another suffered a burn to his arm; all three were taken to Tamworth hospital.
Carthage St fire station officer Bob Luck said the cause was unknown but police were investigating yesterday.
The cause of the fire is not believed to be suspicious.
