The little girl received serious injuries to her legs when she was attacked in the Garden St home of a family member about 3.15pm on Saturday.
The child’s mother and grandmother freed her from the dog and called an ambulance.
She was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital with extensive injuries to both legs. She was flown to John Hunter Hospital for further treatment.
The dog, a five-year-old crossbreed, was secured and its owners have told police they intend to surrender it to the council for destruction.
