Road trip to develop skills

TAMWORTH Water Polo sends four junior teams to Alstonville this weekend as part of a reciprocal arrangement to develop junior players between the two associations that is now in its sixth edition.

TWPA publicity officer, Gail Salter, said the annual development games began five years ago.

“In 2007, Tamworth Water Polo held the first Country Invitational Carnival for Junior players to help prepare the young representative players for State Championships which are held in the second half of the summer water polo season,”  Salter said.

“Previous to this, there was no practise/development carnival available for the junior country players to hone their skills and develop team plays before the State Championships.

“Alstonville Water Polo were invited to compete in the first carnival that year bringing four teams, 15 and Under Girls, 15 and Under Boys and two 13 and Under mixed teams to play against the same from Tamworth. It was decided from that first carnival that the hosting would alternate between Tamworth and Alstonville each year in support of each town.

“Now in its sixth year, the carnival has been a great development tool for both towns’ junior players. Tamworth will be making the trip to Alstonville this weekend taking two 13 and Under Mixed Teams (the Titans and the Trojans), a 15 and Under Girls and a 15 and Under Boys Team to compete against the Alstonville Juniors and North Coast Representative Teams.

“The Tamworth coaches are looking forward to seeing the improved development of the players and junior coaches over the weekend particularly the new junior players having their first foray in the representative ranks.”

Games begin 9.30am tomorrow at Alstonville Pool with finals from 12.40pm Sunday.
