Australian-based Windlab expects to have the farm in operation by 2026.

Tech giant Apple is one of the primary funders but has refused to reveal its financial contribution.

The multinational corporation on Wednesday made guarded revelations about new partnerships, including with Australian universities to develop software coding programs.

At the same time, as part of Apple's racial justice initiatives, it will be funding grants for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses and not-for-profits.

Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, is in Australia on to announce the series of programs.

"We want to play a leadership role, we want to leave the world better than when we found it," Ms Jackson said.

Apple customers contribute to carbon emissions every time they charged their phone, she said.

"We take that as part of our responsibility."

Ms Jackson said "clean energy is actually a good investment these days".

"We feel comfortable knowing that at a minimum we can break even. Clean energy is profitable, it's cleaner, it's just the transition that we need," she said.

Melbourne's RMIT and the University of Technology Sydney will launch short coding courses, sponsored by Apple, to teach students basic app design.

Australia's tech sector is facing a talent drought and Ms Jackson said lifting access to technology education could help.

"De-mystifying and making technology accessible to a broader range of students and people is really important," she said.

In the wake of the George Floyd murder in the United States, Apple established its Racial Equity and Justice Initiative.

"Corporations have a role to play (in racial justice). Racial equity is something we should all strive for," Ms Jackson said.

In Australia, Apple is providing cash to a number of Indigenous community organisations, including an Aboriginal-led investment fund, a post-prison transition support service and a youth mentoring group.

As debate steps up over the establishment of an Indigenous voice to parliament, Ms Jackson wouldn't confirm whether Apple would step into the ring to support a future 'yes' campaign.

But Australia is also facing soaring debt and faces tough choices over programs, like housing, which could help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

In 2020-21, Apple was estimated to have made $10 billion in revenue locally while paying about $120 million in tax.

"We're not gaming any system, we're paying the taxes where they're due," Ms Jackson said.

"But we should also be citizens of the places where we're in."

Overall, Apple is chasing a number of green policies, including going carbon neutral by 2030 and boosting the use of recycled materials, including precious metals, in their products.

"Do we have more that we could do? I mean yeah. But I'm really proud of how far we've come," Ms Jackson said.
