"We hear the community, we hear their cries," PANSW executive member for the western region Chris Jordan said. "This is a new level of crime ... we need the extra boots on the ground."
Union representatives, western region commander Assistant Commissioner Brett Greentree and Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson met to discuss the city's needs on Tuesday afternoon.
"[The meeting] was very positive, there were very fruitful discussions to resolve the staffing issues here as well as the crime issues in this town," Mr Jordan said.
The Tamworth union is calling for at least eight new permanent, trained officers to bolster the thin blue line in the Oxley Police District.
The top priority is the proactive crime team (PCT) - the specialist, covert squad crucial to investigating and disrupting property offenders based on intelligence.
The PANSW claim Oxley's PCT is understaffed compared to nearby districts.
"The resourcing here is a unique case," Mr Jordan said.

Mr Jordan said authorities at the highest level were supportive and open and he was confident the numbers would come when an allocation is announced soon.
And for the officers that "slog their guts out" responding to desperate calls for help every day and night to keep the community safe, he had a message: "Things are positive, things will progress, things will get better."
Extra - though temporary - resources have been deployed to help combat property crime and support the targeted Operation Southbreak, which has made significant arrests.
Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson told the Leader the meeting was about continuing advocacy for the Oxley command and he was backing calls for more cops.
He said he didn't know what the numbers would be, or when the allocation would be announced.
NSW Police said resourcing is based on needs and community programs will continue.
