The increasing number of people with the virus in Tamworth, coupled with the amount of staff off work after contracting it, has left the hospital undermanned and having to accept deficiencies in some areas to make up for others.

Hunter New England Health told the Leader the hospital's services have had to remain "flexible" throughout the pandemic, but people who presented to the emergency department would still receive adequate care.

"Like all other hospitals, Tamworth Hospital has been under significant pressures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however the emergency department (ED) continues to provide high quality care for the community," a spokesperson said.

"Every patient who requires care, for any condition, is triaged and prioritised according to their clinical need. This means that some patients may need to wait longer than others."

Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson confirmed he has been made aware of the issue.

Mr Anderson said he had taken it to the correct authorities and regarded it as a matter of urgency.

"I share our community's concerns regarding the temporary closure of the short stay unit at Tamworth hospital," he said.

"I have raised these concerns with the Minister [for Health in NSW, Brad Hazzard] and Hunter New England Health, and I expect our local health district will continue to work through these issues."

The strain on the health system has become abundantly obvious in recent times, with nurses going on strike last Thursday and the likes of paramedics, admin, cleaners and security doing the same today (Thursday). HNEH admitted it is a particularly tough time for health staff.

"While we work very hard to avoid asking staff to take overtime, a surge in activity, coupled with some staff being furloughed due to COVID-19, has meant there are times when this has been required to ensure an appropriate skills mix at all times," a spokesperson said.
