Trevor Khan will be sworn in as a magistrate on February 3, joining three other recent appointments.

The former Nationals MP left Macquarie Street on January 6, after serving in the upper house since 2007 and working as a solicitor in Tamworth for the two decades prior.

His appointment followed "a merit selection process ... and brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to the bench", a statement from the NSW attorney-general said.

"Mr Khan was in private practice specialising in court advocacy in the Local, District and Family Courts for 20 years. He also brings unique experience to the role from his service in the NSW Legislative Council," Mark Speakman said on Monday.

Former Nationals colleague Jenny Gardiner said the appointment was "excellent", a view echoed by independent MP Alex Greenwich.

"Excellent appointment, but sad Trevor has left (the upper house)," Mr Greenwich said.

"He worked tirelessly, and in a multi-partisan way to achieve some of the toughest reforms including marriage equality, same-sex adoption, safe access zones, decriminalisation of abortion, & voluntary assisted dying."

The local court, the country's busiest court, now has a record 145 judicial officers.

The three most recent additions are former Legal Aid solicitor and legal educator Emma Manea, former public servant Catherine Samuels and former prosecutor and defence solicitor Stephen Barlow.

Four more magistrates are expected to be appointed in coming months.
