A woman in her 60s from the Northern Tablelands, who was unvaccinated and had underlying health conditions, died at St Vincent's Hospital overnight.

In Tamworth, eight new infections have been recorded - the highest in the region. There are four new cases from Gunnedah, three from Inverell and two each in Armidale, Moree and Walcha.

The Upper Hunter region has had a surge in cases, with 11 in Singleton, seven in Muswellbrook and five from the Upper Hunter shire.

In the wider in the Hunter New England region, 674 COVID-19 cases were confirmed on a day when the state's infections crashed through the 2000 mark, hitting 2213.

The case numbers were a jump of almost 500 from the previous day, despite testing numbers having decreased.

Across the state, there were 127,583 tests taken in the most recent reporting period, down from 143,938 tests the day before.

A growing Newcastle and Hunter region outbreak has seen another 308 cases recorded in Newcastle, 190 from Lake Macquarie, 53 from Maitland, 41 from Port Stephens and 24 from Cessnock.
