The 'Take Me Home to Tamworth' exhibition features collections of the photographs, instruments, costumes and sounds that put the city on the map as the capital of country music.
Gallery director and co-curator Bridget Guthrie said the exhibition would allow visitors to celebrate, reflect, and encapsulate the history that has forged Tamworth's identity.
Sourcing, researching and selecting the carefully curated exhibit has taken three years. It will open to the public on Friday.
Historian and co-curator Dr Roslyn Russell hoped the exhibition would give visitors a "taste" of country music and inspire them to learn more about its history in Tamworth and Australia.

"'Take Me Home to Tamworth' aims to provide fresh perspectives on some of the icons, as well as some perhaps lesser-known personal stories," Dr Russell said.
Some of these underlying stories include a focus and collaboration with First Nations people and the impact country music has had in those communities.
The music idols that line the walls of the gallery are set to come to life with confirmation that Roger Knox will make a special appearance.
Understanding the impact country music has had for Tamworth, Ms Guthrie said the most important part of developing the exhibition was the collaborative contribution from the community.
From the photos you see on the walls, to the efforts behind the scenes, locals and volunteers have played a critical role in getting the show to gold standard.
"It's been collaborative and definitely a team effort," Ms Guthrie said.
The exhibition is free to the public and will run until March 2022.
