In a rare event for the Gwydir area, Copeton Dam has spilled over for the first time in nine years and only the fifth time since it's construction.

Keepit Dam on the Namoi River is currently sitting at 101 per cent capacity, with spills continuing and adding to the torrent of water surging through the flooded town of Gunnedah.

Large flows from the Peel River are also washing in downstream of the dam and the state water authority is releasing blocks of the wet stuff from Keepit Dam in an effort to limit the effects.

"Water NSW is monitoring rain forecasts and making releases to increase storage capacity to capture inflows as required," a spokesperson said.

Tamworth's main water supply, Chaffey Dam, was gushing over the unique morning glory spillway on Tuesday, at 103 per cent full.

The huge Split Rock Dam was 55 per cent full on Tuesday.
