The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) put a minor flood watch in place for the city's Peel River on Friday morning, which will be upgraded to an official warning if conditions worsen.

The Namoi River at Gunnedah, Upper Macintyre River at Inverell and the Gwydir River in the wider Moree area were also on flood watches on Friday afternoon.

"Catchments likely to be affected by flooding are currently saturated following rainfall earlier in the week," the BoM said.

It said the flooding could occur from Sunday.

The BoM said the evening could bring possible thunderstorms while Saturday could see showers on Saturday and a warm top temperature of 32 degrees in Tamworth.

Sunday is expected to be the peak of the upcoming wet weather and Tamworth has a 95 per cent chance of rain, which could dump up to 35mm in gauges across Tamworth.

The wet weather is part of a system which is forecast to affect large parts of the state.
