Operation Trance police were out in force on the region's main routes and back roads between Friday and Sunday.

Peel Highway Patrol manager Inspector Kelly Wixx told the Leader there were no issues with public health order breaches but there were still plenty of poor decisions being made.

"What is concerning is that they were all local offenders," Inspector Wixx said.

"Police are not just in our main regional centres ... we do come out to small communities and we do ensure people are safe on all of our roads."

A 27-year-old man will front court after police allegedly busted him behind the wheel of a Toyota Landcruiser at Spring Ridge while he was more than three times the legal blood alcohol limit.

Inspector Wixx said it was concerning that seven people were charged with drink driving from 220 random breath tests and another seven drivers returned a positive result for prohibited drugs from 60 tests taken.

"The chances of you having a serious injury collision increase significantly," she warned.

"We always urge people to make good decisions while driving because you are responsible for everyone in your car and for making those good decisions to protect the whole community."

A total of 12 people were charged and an additional 63 traffic infringement notices were issued over the three-day operation.

Inspector Wixx said more than half were for speeding, two learner drivers were caught unaccompanied and there were three further unlicensed drivers amid other offences.

Highway patrol police conducted a one-day safety crackdown on school zones in Tamworth on Thursday.

Inspector Wixx said it was "horribly concerning" that 35 people were caught speeding in school zones, there were seatbelt infringements and one driver returned a positive drug test.

She said police needed the community to do the right thing to keep kids safe.
