THE BIG Golden Guitar has begun its makeover, with staff descending on the iconic landmark on Tuesday afternoon.
It is receiving a touch up ahead of the Tamworth Country Music Festival's 50th anniversary, which will kick off in January next year.
The event is expected to attract a huge crowd, especially as it will be one of the first large-scale music festivals held following the end of strict COVID-19 restrictions in NSW.
In an effort that Tamworth Regional Council has described as a "mammoth task", the guitar will be cleaned, undergo minor repairs and finally be spray-painted in its iconic gold colour.
Although, some passers-by may catch a glimpse of a rare sight on Wednesday morning, when undercoat paint will see the statue turn grey.
Council have stated Tamworth's extreme whether conditions have made the guitar faded and weathered throughout the years, which is also part of the reason it is receiving an upgrade.
The tourist attraction is set to be off limits until Saturday, October 9.
