Initial estimates indicate thousands were vaccinated, and Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson said conversations were already being had about how and when a similar event can take place.

He revealed discussions are being had on Monday between himself, the University of Newcastle, University of New England, Hunter New England Health and Tamworth Regional Council as to how they can better vaccinate the community.

"This will determine the next phase of getting the community vaccinated, so I'll be looking at options to do another, similar mass vaccination in the very near future," he said.

The news comes as NSW set a new Australian record of 1218 locally acquired cases in the 24 hours leading up to 8pm on Saturday.

But, Tamworth was doing its part to help get out of the troubling situation, with extra freedoms set to be announced once 70 per cent of the state is fully vaccinated.

However, authorities are also asking locals to get tested, after fragments of COVID-19 were found in Tamworth sewage.

The traces were found in testing that took place on Thursday, while the virus was also found in sewage tests on Tuesday.

Mr Anderson said it was crucial for everybody to sign in via the Service NSW app and do the right thing so it would be easy to locate and stop the spread of the virus if it was in the region.

"That contact tracing is so important, and that's what NSW Health is doing now, they're doing that contact tracing to see if they are able to access that source," he said.

Getting the jab is also something he sees as being crucial in the battle against coronavirus, and he praised the community for their efforts over the weekend, which saw 25 GP clinics and pharmacies across Tamworth, Gunnedah and Manilla offering bookings or walk-ins.

"The numbers this weekend have been really pleasing, obviously we need to keep these numbers up so we can get to that magical 80 per cent as quickly as possible," he said.

"And obviously we have to do the same again in between four and six weeks for all the people that we've done this weekend, so we're only half way there with this bunch."
