The New England weeds authority has labelled serrated tussock a "high priority weed" and warned the pest can become a dominant species in a very short period of time if left unchecked.

A spokesperson for the authority said the weed has "extremely low nutritional value and all animals forced to graze serrated tussock will lose condition and feed supplements will be needed to provide energy and protein."
"While everyone is at home staying COVIDSafe ... go for a walk over your paddocks and have a look for serrated tussock," he said.

Serrated tussock, a South American grass that can grow up to 45cm tall, can produce more than 140,000 seeds in a good year.
Its seeds can be windblown and travel over 50km.
